I joined the Grit Orchestra in 2016 after witnessing the initial orchestration of Martyn Bennett’s album “Grit” at Celtic Connections that year.
Greg Lawson told me he was working on “Bothy Culture” another of Martyn’s albums for the Grit Orchestra and I started making noises from it (I had devoured both albums as a teen), then he told me “You’ve got the gig”! There were lots of noises and characterful humorous bits that Martyn put on his albums. A very enjoyable genius.
We played the Edinburgh Playhouse at the Edinburgh International Festival and the WOMAD that summer. It was an absolute pleasure to be involved and to work with the vocal section in this astounding orchestra! The vocal section were Rab Noakes, Karen Matheson, Annie Grace, Fiona Hunter, Sorren MacLean and Mischa MacPherson.
It was also an absolute pleasure to be asked back to cover all the character and noises of Martyn’s voice on “Bothy Culture and Beyond” in the SSE Hydro at Celtic Connections this year with my good friends Sorren MacLean and Fiona Hunter once again!
